About Degema Local Government Area, Rivers State

Degema (DEGELGA) is a prominent riverine Local Government Area located in the saltwater swamp forest region of Rivers State, Nigeria. With its administrative headquarters in Degema Town, the LGA is a strategic coastal hub that shares a close geographical and cultural bond with the neighboring city of Abonnema, separated only by a narrow creek.

Known as a center of administrative and judicial history, Degema is one of the oldest colonial-era administrative headquarters in the Niger Delta. The region is defined by its deep-water channels, vibrant riverine commerce, and its role as a primary gateway for the maritime activities of the Kalabari people.

The Blue Economy and Marine Trade

The economy of Degema is naturally built upon its aquatic environment. Artisanal and Commercial Fishing are the lifeblood of the coastal communities, while the region’s deep-water access supports a bustling Maritime Logistics and Transport sector. Degema serves as a critical transit point for goods and passengers moving between the Atlantic coastline and the metropolitan markets of Port Harcourt.

As the 2026 maritime sector digitizes, transport operators and commercial fishing enterprises in Degema are prioritizing web development. A professional digital presence is essential for these businesses to manage fleet operations, showcase their export capacity, and connect with regional distributors in a modern, tech-driven economy.

Energy Assets and Institutional Strength

Degema is a significant contributor to the energy wealth of Rivers State, hosting numerous Oil and Gas Installations and pipeline networks. The presence of these resources has attracted technical support firms and engineering contractors to the region. Furthermore, Degema is an institutional stronghold, hosting major judicial bodies, healthcare facilities, and a detachment of the Nigerian Navy, which ensures maritime security and stability in the axis.

Culture and The "Degema" Identity

The people of Degema possess a unique cultural and linguistic identity within the broader Kalabari-Ijaw landscape. The region is home to several ancient and influential communities known for their sophisticated traditional systems and festive masquerade traditions. The "Degema Spirit" is characterized by a strong sense of communal justice, high intellectual ambition, and a long history of successful international trade dating back to the palm oil era.
